last one before i give the after at home
it is 3 minuets before we are supposed to elave on the bus to the air port i wanted to make a quick check in before my long trip him. its gonna be a few hrs until im there.
so once again i have been so busy im sure i havent even gotten enough sleep i will again give the short explaination follwed by the long one. gun range, bow range, stick shift, egor, gabor, switching houses, euro man underwear, goodbye party, lajus the sculptor, beast in the bathroom, marzipan museum, the once and future king, prairie tour, whips, karaoke followed bye dance, lots of churches, leaving on a train, buda and pest, crown jewels and a big building, swimming pool, last shopping. keep in mind im jsut trying to bring as many memories back to all of you and they may or may not be in order.
gun range- gabor took david joe and i to shoot guns at a gun range gun club. we shot small pistols for a little while but it was a incredibly hot day so we left a little bit early.
bow range- later that day after it had cooled off we went to a archery range. according to what i understand, hungarians were known for their bow skills. so people who come to this archery range use traditionally built bows with no new age add ons. the bows themselves were beautifully crafted and were very fun. at this range they also had spears which we tried. although alot harder to get a hold of than the bow, they were much more fun.
stick shift- i had forgotten about this in one of my former updates but it was very important activity in this trip. davids older brother took us to a empty road and let joe and i try to drive his stick shift car. most of the cars here are stick shift and they are very difficult to grasp. i did alright but i still think shifting on a motorcycle is much easier.
egor- a little town a few hours away from debrecen or mateszalka. it consists of many tourist shops and a beautiful fortress that stands above the city. although the fortress is large. there is nothing inside the walls to protect. from what we could gather after rich men bought the fortress they would go broke trying to fix it never having enough money to put more than one house inside. so imagine a great field with a giant wall in a circle put a house in the middle of the circle and thats what it was. although the fortress itself wasnt so much to offer there many interesting tunnels around and amazing views off the walls.
gabor- we love gabor( chicken mcnaughts)
switching houses- well we left gergos house and went to gabors flat outside of mateszalka in a town called debrecen which was a bigger city tha n mateszalka and had a little more to offer for shopping or activities around the city. we spent only two days at gabors flat there before moving to his sisters flat in budapest. it is a amall apartment on the 5th floor of a nice building. it is pretty much right in the middle of everything. you can walk to just about anywhere you need to go from her house.
euro man underwear- i know what you all are thinking on this one and yes i knwo it is a little wierd. joe (my american room mate on this trip) has had a complete and ridiculous obsession to find some of what he calls quote "man panties". that he swears you can only get here in yurope. so these last few days we have been here we have been searching for some and sadly he bought two pairs. i would show you what they look like but that would require that joe be a model in the picture. so for your safety i will spare you the horrors of joe in his"man panties".
goodbye party- we had our goodbye party ab out 5 days before we were ever leaving hungary. many of the people were saying goodbye while we were stil in mateszalka because we would spend our last 4 days in budapest. there were many hugs, many pictures, many drinks for the locals, and many sad faces wishing us all to not leave. there were once again many gifts as always consisting of thoughtful things for each of us. but as it got dark and many people started to leave joe and i headed back to gabors house. with gifts in my hand and memories in my heart, i surely would not forget these people.
lajus the sculptor- one day while we were stilla gergo's house the man who designed the poleo statue in krutch park, invited us to tour his studio. is was very plain except for the beginings of a new statue he was working on and was supposed to release in january. the new statue was still int he stage of designing how it will look with clay. even in these early stages the statue was probably almost 7-8 ft tall.
beast in the bathroom. while we were at gergo' house we had a little animal crawl into the open window of our bathroom. this green tree frog that i found on my deodorant was no biger than a jfk half dollar and was eager to get away from us when i took some pictures of him. he is hethforth named timmy the tree frog. he is imprinted on my heart.
marzipan museum- is exactly what it sounds like except the marzipan in this museum were shaped in enormous and detailed statues. the pictures i bring home will better explain the statues.
the once and future king- ok for this one i went all out on the title because this is a section dedicated tot eh midevil meal we ate at a restuarant named excalibur. excalibur is of course king arthur's sword which bring me to my favorite king arthur book the once and future king. so the meal was eaten with our hands and all aspects fo teh restuarant were that of olden times. candles and no electricity, weapons and armor on the wals, clay pitchers and cups, and of course my favorite animal furs all around. this was by far teh best meal i have eaten while being here but after it was over i thought i was going to pop i ate so much.
prairie tour- we awoke at gabors flat to get on a bus with all others to travel a few hours out to veiw the hungarian "great plains". and believe me, they are great and man are they plain. we rode around in covered wagons and saw many animals after which they had a hungarian horseman show. which was interesting considering they had tought their horses to sit like a dog. another trick rider stood on the backs of two horses then held the reins of another 4 which was amazing. after the tour was over we piled into the bus and went to a market.
whips-crack(silence). hours of fun for anyone.
karaoke followed by dance- i sang thriller by michael jackson and then asng no woman no cry with the only black guy in all of debrcen. after which i danced to the music and me and the black guy had dance offs and boy was it fun.
lots of churches- calvanist, synagogs, catholic. i have seen them all.
leaving on a train- we traveled out of debrecen by train and many of our friends came to visit us. realize debrecen is an hour away from mateszalka. so these people who realizing they may never see us again were coming with open arms and great smiles once again to see us. gergo did come to the train station but he did not come with us to stay in budapest for our last few days. reka the only hungarian girl delagate cried when we finally had to get on the train. for a little while it did not hit me but i was leaving. i am writing this catch up post the night before i leave and i couldnt be more unhappy that i am leaving this beautiful country with such kind people.
buda and pest- toured the city. its really really big. but during our tour temperatures in budapest hit a record high of over 100 degrees f.
crown jewels and a big building- the crwn jewels are what were passed down to hungarian kings. they were amazing and i was glad to have stood near such important ancient items. the big building of course was parliament, where the relics were housed.
swimming pool- lots of speedos. 3 different pools all different temperatures. very fun but the hot thermal pool water was yellow. a little questionable on where that water came from.
last shopping- buyig gifts for everyone is hard while your trying to guage how much money you have and want to spend on everyone. although i missed many opportunities to get kool gifts with the thought of. oh i will find it some place else. i think i was able to find at least a little somthign for almost everyone.
i did not title this last section because i have talked alot about what i have done during the trip and not really what i have gotten out of it or really felt. i got here and i was a little nervous for the first day and then calmed down and realized i was going to love it. now after all this happiness and joy i am getting out of the trip. i am dreading and fearign the inevitable. the thought of leavign my friends and not seeing them for a long time. i did not think about it at first. after it finally hit me that oh jeez today is my last day i began to become more more and more depressed at the thought of leaving. and although i want to go home and i miss many things. i am going to miss so much here. it is now 11 here i leave for the airport at 4 50 i will write again before i go to sleep but for now i need to clear my mind and try and look at the good times and great moments i have had. oh and while im at it the theme for this trip. hey there delilah im coming home.
gun range- gabor took david joe and i to shoot guns at a gun range gun club. we shot small pistols for a little while but it was a incredibly hot day so we left a little bit early.

late update
it has been a few days since a last update and while i know you all have been losing sleep over what i have to say i have been so busy i have barely been able to do anything. other than what they have planned. so and overview is neccessary. i will give the quick update and then i will try as best as i can to give all the details. gokarts, car emblems, orphans, goddbye brazil, romania, garden, soccer, bycycle, pictures, switching houses, welcome to romania, gaga, rudolfs spotted milk kurds, factory, horses, cliffs.
please keep in mind that all of this is out of order since i cant put it all together without a schedule which i cannot find right now.
so starting from the top
gokarts- a few days ago gergo called one of his friends who owns a gokart place. gergo got it fixed so that his friend would open up the place for us and us only on said day. we rode for quite a few hours and it was very fast and very fun. lots of good pictures.
car emblems- since i have been to europe i have been wantign an alfa romeo car emblem. so earlier on the day we rode gokarts davids brother took us to a junkyard to try and find some. we found other kool ones. some of which i dont know the names but we came out with audi, mecedes, dacia, two german cars, trebaunt (i think thats how its spelled), opel, and maybe one more. we could not however find and alpha romeo. so time turns and we end up on the last dayof staying with davids family and one of my going away presents is you guessed it an alpha romeo symbol.
orphans- we visited the orphanage where the money will be going to build the playground. the place is very large and the kids there are veryfriendly and we plan on going back at some point and playing soccer.
goodbye brazil- one of the past nights a girl from brazil who had been here for a year on an exchange student program with rotary wasleavign. her family from brazil came to see where she had stayed and her host family threw here a big party. oh and while at the party (dad this part is for you and i to try and set up) the girl from brazil and on of the rotary moderators here wanted to see if knoxville would also exchange with epachinga brazil (i hope i spelled that right) so when i get back dad i would like to speak to the knoxville rotary club about going for the first time.
romania- yesterday the 15th we went hiking in romania inthe caspian mountains. it was a long hike but, before the buseven made it to where we were supposed to start. the left rear suspension broke. which added and extra two miles or so. no big deal though. once we got to the top of the mountain. it was covered with fields of blueberries. many sections had already been picked over there were places whereyou could sit and enjoy many. there was also a huge cliff towering over where everyone was sitting and eating which joe and i climbed to the top of and watched the clouds got many many good pictures and one panaramic video view. but needless to say it was a very long daya havingwoke up at 5 and gotten home at 10 30.
garden- while we were at the orphanage we were supposed to help build the playyground but since the check got there when we got there they had not gotten the supplies to build the playground. so iunstead we planted many flowers and plants in teh gardens around one side of theorphanage.
soccer- we had been going to a basketball court on some days to play 21. this was while we were still at davids house. but one day when we got there the whole court was being used for a full game. so joe and i jumped in and played until we had to get ready for the goodbye party.
bycycle- the day before our long hike in romania we had done a 50 kilometer bikeridearound different parts of mateszalka. it was pretty easy right up untill the roads turned to sand and not only did you have to fight to keepgoign but fight harder to stay upright in the sand.
but the long journey was fun and some of the olfer orphans had come with us so it was very cool and interesting.
pictures- i am up to 581 not counting the ones i took in romania yesterday.
switching houses- this is an easy one we left davids hosue and went to gergos house. enough said.
welcome to romania- so this part is jsut funny in my opinoin. im going to set the scene for you all. its 6 30 in the morning we are meetign the bus to take us to romania and back. the bus gets there and nobody gets on. first they load it with beer. so noweveryone is on and the 4 casesof 24 packs are secured. so we start goign down the roadbout30 minutes and then. they break out a bottle and start doing shots. not like one but maybe 2-3 a piece. this is just the adults(so far). then about 45 minutes passes by and we hit the romanian border. we get through all right and as soon as wel pass through its a welcometo ramania sheer. and more shots followed by a flask that is passedaround to everyone sittign in the back. the front is once again being drowned by shots. so we get to where the bus breaks down and yeah theres stress so moreshots and break out the beers. . yada yada wego hike come back. cross into hungary more shtos more beers. it was a lovely ceremony filled with great spirits.
gaga- he is the man. everyone should love him
rudolfs spotted milk kurds- this is probably my favorite chapter in my little story and the fact that i am eating one right now makes it that much sweeter. they are uhh chocolate covered milk kurds. they are in no way spotted. but they aredelicious. every house has many of them and eats them all the time. lunch breakfast dinner. and they are amazing.
factory- there are two factories i have visited to we will start wil factory A. factory a is where davids mom works. this factory makes italian designer clothes. this factory also stitched a hole in a pair of my shorts. after figuring the price of one of the cheapest coats 1100 dollars. we just figured everythign was pretty expensive.
ok now onto facotry B. this factory makes dehydrated fruit chips. they although sounding a little different are very good. the best by far are the applechips coveredin chocolate.
horses- on our bike trip we stopped at a horse farm and got many good pictures the farmer let us into the pen with the younger ones and there were 4 that were less than 6 months old. gots fun pictures.
cliffs- the top of the mountain had some cool perch areas where joe and i sat for a while. i already told you i got god pics from up there though.
so that is the cover update hopefully i covered everything but im sure ill remember somthign and have to go back at some point.
please keep in mind that all of this is out of order since i cant put it all together without a schedule which i cannot find right now.

wedding and after
we left for the wedding at 3 50. i believe it is customary for everyone to be served a type of lunch and talk before the ceremony and at which point the party follows. so we stood around and met few people. while sampling many different foods and....... drinks. after so long a man (speaking no english at all) gave a very long speach about the bride and groom. after the speach was finished we all ehaded over to the church for a short ceremony after which point we returned to a museum they had rented out for their party. now for some reason they had another ceremony on these party grounds but joe explained its so that they can have marraige in teh church and one for the government as well. so both of the ceremonies were over and the americans walked around and tried to be social for as long as we could untillwe all finally sat down and talked amongst ourselves and waited for the dinner to start. i think at some point we all sampled a little drink of somthing. minus joe who took a little more of most things. people began to sit and the dinner began it was very slow in between courses but the stuffed cabbage and what i have come to find out as chicken soup was delicious. the dinner went later and later into the night but the americans and some of our new friends, one being an exchange student from brayzil named izabella had planned on going to the disco. we said our goodbyes took a few more bites and left. joe david and i returned to davids house to change and then get backinto davids car to drive about 25 minutes to teh disco. it was more like a with a nightclub on one side. but all and all it was alot of fun. we arrived at the disco at 10 30 and we arrived home at 4 20. so needless to say we had an excellent time. i am writing this and it is not 5 16. davids family is waking us up at 9 to attend a hungarian mass. i think i will be alright but we will see.
first update on first day
it is now 3 we leave for a wedding in exactly 50 minutes. i woke up at 12 and joe woke up at around 2. we ate stuffed cabbage, deer and salad for breakfast and after that our host mother gave us peaches. i have gotten my clothes ironed in time for the wedding. our host mother also tells us that there will be many different kinds of traditional hungarian foods. i plan to sample every one.

long day
first off it has taken me the better part of an hour to figure out how to use google blogs becuase it keeps changing to hungarian. second the keyboard is throwing me way outta whack but after some quick analasis the key were figured out. now for what everyone really cares abou. after arriving at the nashvillee airport. i was able to make it through security quickly and without problem. after locating the rest of my overseas traveling troop we sat at the gate for a short time waiting for our plane to board. we boarded the plane to find out that it was so empty thea let us have open seating. we arrive in washington. with a one our time frame to make it to our next flight. luckils the gate was right next to where the bus dropped us of. since i knew the long flight would have some bad airline meals i went ahead and ate at wendys so that i wouldnt be starving. we board the plane and taxi on the runway for what seemed like an hour before we took o. after watching on emovie i fell asleep to wake up when we hit the ground landing. it was a little startling not having any idea what was going on. upon arriving in germany we tried to come up with a plan of wht to do with our 5 hour lay over. after sitting and eating walking around and exploring the duty free shops. we had successfully wasted most of the time. we headed towards the gate where we waited for another 45 minutes before boarding our last flight to budapesht. the flight was jsut a little over an hour. and once again i slept through the majority of the flight. wee arrive in budapesht grab our bags head out the gates to see a small but warming welcome party waiting for us. name exchanges were made at which point we all jumped into a large van and began the 4 hr journey to mateszalka. we stopped along the way at a restuarant where the food was delicious and after finishing the quick meal jumped back on teh road to finish the trip. joe and i arrived david s house where his mother and father made a quick meal which we ate and after that began to unpack and just rest. i am finishing this writing up and the time here is 2 am. we have a wedding tomorrow so i think i will leave to try to get some sleep.

before the trip
i have exactly two hours and 8 minutes before we leave for the long car ride to my first flight. i am still not finished packing and even worse i forgot to put new music on my ipod (i think ill survive this time though).
as i sit at my computer desk i cant help but feel kinda of tired having woken up at 4:45 to take the hungarians to the airport. then thinking that i will be traveling so far so soon makes my stomach lurch (no wait just hungry). i will post first chance i get to once i arrive.
